Fall Newsletter ’08 – Old Alley Quilt Shop
Summer is coming to a close… back to school sales are blossoming… and Sharon and I don’t care!!! We both think summer is never ending this year! Isn’t retirement from school grand?!!
Summer has been busy! Our signs on HWY 4 and I-90 along with the Minnesota Shop Hop have introduced us to many new quilters. We thank all of the new people who have stopped this summer along with all our old friends who visit us on a regular basis for our wonderful summer.
We are looking forward to an equally great fall as we gear up our class schedule, vend at the Comfry Quilt Show, celebrate our FOURTH Anniversary, participate in the HWY 4 & Beyond Shop Hop, and welcome our guest instructor, Marilyn Foreman. During November Marilyn’s quilts will be hanging in the classroom. Also on Saturday, Nov. 15th at 2 PM, Marilyn will have a short trunk show – talk – pattern signing. Please feel free to stop in and hear what she has to say.
My summer has been filled with a few fishing trips, helping our youngest son get settled in a new job – house - as he starts his first teaching assignment this fall, and trying to keep up gardens (do you know that a branch clipper works for clipping big weeds in flower beds as well as wild trees?) at the shop and at home. I keep trying to get our customers to pull a weed as they walk down the sidewalk, but I am not getting much cooperation. At home, Joel’s vegetable garden is producing tomatoes, green beans, and sweet corn by the bushel and has less weeds in it than my flower beds. I haven’t been able to talk him into helping out with the flowers…he says he gardens for his stomach, not his eyes. I do love the end of summer (and his garden) for the fresh garden veggies even though I don’t like the sound of the words “end of summer” (even when I know the bells are no longer ringing for me).
Sharon’s summer took a sad turn in July as she lost her black and white cat companion of eight years. Complications of kidney failure shortened Baby’s life and caused some sadness. Simba, Sharon’s big black outdoor cat, still keeps her company.
Sharon and I are turning our summer camping trip into a fall trip…….hopefully. We are retired, but it seems that time has become even harder to find than it was when we were both teaching. If nothing else, we know we are going to Janesville, Wisc. for some long arm repair. Hopefully, the long arm will fit in the trunk. We probably will do hotels rather than camping cabins for this trip, however. But maybe early October or later in September, we can find time and an open camping cabin in a MN State Park to sit by the fire for a few days.
We hope that the summer has been everything you wanted it to be. As the nights get longer, start cranking the sewing machine up again. It beats watching TV, and you may even get the Christmas present or decoration done before Christmas! Happy Fall from Old Alley.
